Glass generally refers to hard, brittle, transparent material, such as those used for windows, many bottles, or eyewear. Examples of such materials include, but are not limited to, soda-lime glass, borosilicate glass, acrylic glass, sugar glass, isinglass (Muscovy-glass), or aluminium oxynitride. In the technical sense, glass is an inorganic product of fusion which has been cooled through the glass transition to a rigid condition without crystallizing. Many glasses contain silica as their main component and glass former. In the scientific sense the term glass is often extended to all amorphous solids (and melts that easily form amorphous solids), including plastics, resins, or other silica-free amorphous solids. In addition, besides traditional melting techniques, any other means of preparation are considered, such as ion implantation, and the sol-gel method. However, and physics commonly includes only inorganic amorphous solids, while plastics and similar organics are covered by polymer science, biology and further scientific disciplines. Glass plays an essential role in science and industry. The optical and physical properties of glass make it suitable for applications such as flat glass, container glass, optics and optoelectronics material, laboratory equipment, thermal insulator (glass wool), reinforcement fiber (glass-reinforced plastic, glass fiber reinforced concrete), and art. The term glass developed in the late Roman Empire. It was in the Roman glassmaking center at Trier, Germany, that the late-Latin term glesum originated, probably from a Germanic word for a transparent, lustrous substance. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License do floating tealights in glass bowls make the glass bowls crack? Q. I tired putting tea lights in a glass fish bowl full of water and the tea light flame was on the edge of the glass. a few minutes later it cracked. is this from the heat? is it just cheap glass? would thicker glass be better? Is it that the bowl was too full? It was about 3/4 full. Does anyone have any remedies? I am using this idea for my wedding. Asked by Matt - Sat Jun 14 06:47:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would not expect the small flame of a tea light candle to provide enough heat to crack a fishbowl, but if you floated the bare candle and it could snuggle up under the lip it might. I have been experimenting with oil candles made of just a wick wrapped in aluminum foil to control the size of the flame on a wire sticking up from a spiral base in a glass bowl or cup and like the effect much more because instead of a shadow below the flame, the light can go down through the water. The bowl keeps the flame from touching the rim. Answered by mike1942f - Sun Jun 15 01:49:21 2008 How do you clean a glass cook top really good? Q. Q. We just got a ball python and I would like to get fingerprints off the outside of the "aquarium" glass. I know that I need to use vinegar or another natural cleaner for the interior, but can I use a commercial window cleaner (like Windex) for the outside glass? If not, what can I use as a streak free exterior glass cleaner? Asked by kanpope - Wed May 20 10:19:06 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can but you need to becarful it doesnt get inside the tank, and not to touch the outside of the tank when it is still wet and then touch the inside... also don't forget the the cleaner does tend to "mist" and some of it can get inside the tank, try putting it on a piece of cloth/paper towel and wipe the tank instead of spraying it right on... and it may help if you remove the tank first and put it in another bucket/get someone else to hold it, hope that helps! (i personally use warm water/mix with vinegar) Answered by aspinn2008 - Wed May 20 14:12:54 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Glass" Obituraries 7-16-09 Glass , Perkins Scardina, Tootle, Zoldi
