Beer is the world's oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea. It is produced by the brewing and fermentation of starches, mainly derived from cereal grains—the most common of which is malted barley, although wheat, maize (corn), and rice are widely used. Most beer is flavoured with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative, though other flavourings such as herbs or fruit may occasionally be included. Some of humanity's earliest known writings refer to the production and distribution of beer: the Code of Hammurabi included laws regulating beer and beer parlours, and "The Hymn to Ninkasi," a prayer to the Mesopotamian goddess of beer, served as both a prayer and as a method of remembering the recipe for beer in a culture with few literate people. Today, the brewing industry is a global business, consisting of several dominant multinational companies and many thousands of smaller producers ranging from brewpubs to regional breweries. The basics of brewing beer are shared across national and cultural boundaries and are commonly categorized into two main types—the globally popular pale lagers, and the regionally distinct ales, which are further categorised into other varieties such as pale ale, stout and brown ale. The strength of beer is usually around 4% to 6% alcohol by volume (abv.) though may range from less than 1% abv., to over 20% abv. in rare cases. Beer forms part of the culture of various beer-drinking nations and has acquired various social traditions and associations, such as beer festivals and a rich pub culture involving activities such as pub crawling or pub games such as bar billiards. I have been inivited to a beer-tasting party and everyone is supposed to bring a unique beer for everyone to sample. I would appreciate some suggestions for a beer that would be different yet enjoyable for everyone to try. Men's Health rated 'Saison Dupont' the 'Best Beer in the World' but I am hoping that someone can confirm this if they have tried it. Thanks! Asked by Matt - Thu Dec 6 10:55:44 2007 - - 18 Answers - 1 Comments A. Firstly, homebrew is the most unique of any beer available. That being said, and you're probably not a homebrewer, I would go with something that either you like personally, or that you don't think anyone else at the party will be bringing. Sam Adams seasonals are always a nice change of pace. Their Winter Lager is out right now, and it is quite good, so is their Honey Porter. Or try a local micro-brew. The problem with getting into any critic's 'best beer in the world', is that some of those brews can get quite expensive. It would be one thing for you to buy yourself a bottle or 2 for tasting, but if you are going to a tasting party, that means you need to take enough for at least most of the people there to taste it. I'm planning on having some football tailgates at my house this fall and I think a beer pong table would be a nice feature at such gatherings. I'd like to be able to use the 60" round plastic table that I already have as the base for a board on which the game could be set up. Does anyone know what the standard size board is for beer pong tables? Also, are there any special prepartions in the process of making a beer pong table, such as sanding and/or priming? Asked by Magic 8 Ball - Sat Aug 19 18:06:13 2006 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. The dimensions of the table can vary but it is generally accepted that it should be rectangular, long, and somewhat narrow. A standard 4x8 piece of plywood is long enough but you may want to cut a foot of width off of it. It all depends on what your house rules are. Its a good idea to seal it after you paint it to prevent any damage from excess liquids. Several coats of polyurethane should do. That will not prevent the board from warping though. You may want to build a 2x4 framing underneath it. You could probably just go to any hardware store and tell what your doing, they can help with the materials. Answered by TA Timmy - Sat Aug 19 18:18:06 2006 How can I drink wine or beer without getting hives?
Q. I believe I have recently developed an allergy to wine and beer. Hives form after a glass. I don't drink very often, but do enjoy wine or beer occasionally and would like to still be able to have some. Is there something I can do to prevent the hives, itching, swelling that comes with it? I have been enjoying wine and beer for years, and only just recently started having this problem. Asked by JENNIFER J - Fri Feb 9 10:43:04 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. That's a tough question. I suffer from allergies myself, and I have reactions to certain red wines-they give me terrible hangovers even if I only drink a glass. I would advise you NOT to take an antihistamine, since it tends to make you drowsy-it will probably intensify the effects of the alcohol. If you really and truly enjoy the taste of wine and beer, then go to an allergist and see if they can run a prick test on you to find out which ones cause you the most problems. I would try white wine, since it has a much lower level of histimines (red wine is high in histamines!) and it might be easier on your system. Another thought: an allergist once told my sister to think of allergy tolerance like a bucket.
