A toy is an object used in play. Toys are usually associated with children and pets, but it is not unusual for adult humans and some non-domesticated animals to play with toys. Many items are manufactured to serve as toys, but goods, or (game-centric) services produced for other purposes can also be used as toys. A child may pick up a household item and 'fly' it around pretending that it is an airplane, or an animal might play with a pinecone by batting at it, biting it, chasing it, or by throwing it up in the air. Some toys are produced primarily as collector's items and are not intended to be played with. The origin of toys is prehistoric; dolls representing infants, animals, and soldiers, as well as representations of tools used by adults are readily found at archaeological sites. The origin of the word "toy" is unknown, but it is believed that it was first used in the 14th century. Toys, and play in general, are important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. The young use toys and play to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults. Adults use toys and play to form and strengthen social bonds, teach, remember and reinforce lessons from their youth, discover their identity, exercise their minds and bodies, explore relationships, practice skills, and decorate their living spaces. Toys are more than simple amusement, they and the ways that they are used profoundly influence many aspects of life. GNU Free Documentation License What are good toys for a hyper indoor cat? Q. My cat loves to play! She shreds up and tries to eat any toys with feathers, so I can't use those anymore. I let her play with little jingly balls during the day, and she loves them so much, but they're too noisy for night time. And she really loves to play at night. She doesn't seem to care too much for catnip filled toys. Any suggestions for a quieter toy that she might like to play with at night? Q. I want to get my lil piggie something fun to play with, but I heard alot of the toys that are out there on the market can hurt their back. Any suggestions? Asked by sweetheartkat22 - Wed May 27 14:57:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The best and most safe toys for guinea pigs are actually things you can find right in your house. They love things like toilet and paper towel rolls (of course make sure it's just the cardboard roll without any paper on it), they also enjoy brown paper bags, just open each end and they will chew on it and run through it like a tunnel. you can also fill it with hay. Some guinea pigs also like small bird toys that you can find at the pet store, just make sure it isn't too big and doesn't have too many strings and things on it that could be a choking hazard. But you're right most toys out there are harmful to piggies and the exercise balls should never be used because a guinea pigs body is not as flexible as a hamster or gerbil. Q. I am doing a project on an aspect of the 1960's. I chose to do toys and how they are somewhat of an effect of history. So if anyone grew-up then could you please give me some information. Just things like what did you play with or what was popular. Early 1970's toys could be helpful too. Thank You! Asked by Weaselboy215 - Thu May 21 10:10:34 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I had a need toy that was called the Playmobile. it came out in the early sixties, it was a car dashboard and used batteries, it made engine sounds and the signal worked, etc. It was cool Play-doh and the Slinky are also toys from the sixties as are matchbox cars and Hot wheels (Hot wheels were late 60's and probably more popular in the 70's) The Hula hoop was from the 50's but remained popular in the 60's. I had a Viewmaster which was cool and the Ouija Board came out in 64 or 65 and Clue came a bit before that. Here are some helpful sites for you too. interesting question, I hope this helps you out.
