How many kegs/half barrels of beer should I get?
Q. I am getting married and we are expecting about 275 people. We do have some heavy beer drinkers. We are also getting 10 gallons of champagne punch for the non beer drinkers. How many kegs of beer do you think we should get?
Asked by Kari - Tue Feb 10 17:15:39 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 15.5 gal. = 1984 oz. That is approx. 120 pints of beer. Or 160 12 oz beers. Now for parties you have to know your crowd. Good call with punch, but you have to estimate how many beer drinkers there are and follow a simple formula. Multiply the number of drinkers by the duration of the party in hrs, then you have to think. How many beers is the avg. party-goer going to consume each hour? Whatever number decide (I like 3) multiply that by the product you got earlier

Where can I find root beer kegs?
Q. Specifically in the Salem, Oregon area. But just in general it is good to know as well. Is there more I need to know? I don't really know anything about kegs at all.

A. you mean like thomas kemper? that comes in a 5 gallon cola type can. all the rest are usually just syrup in foil bladders in a cardboard box. prolly only one t. kemper distributor in your town. first beverage distributor you call will tell you who distributes kemper. you'll need a tap as well. best way to go if you want a keg is call around, find out which tavern does keg sales. they can hook you up and will have the tap available for a deposit.

Where is the cheapest place in the UK to buy kegs of lager?
Q. Hi, I have been thinking about setting up a home bar. Most of the websites that sell kegs seem to be between 80 and 150 for a 11 gallon keg. Assuming that this is an imperial gallon then that's 88 pints - less than one pint per pound. Where is the cheapest place to buy kegs of lagers such as Stella or Carling etc? I cant imagine that pubs pay this much.
Asked by Joe - Tue Feb 17 09:30:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hi Joe. You're right about the 88 pints per keg figure, although I tend to allow for 80 pints - there will occasionally be some wastage when you try to pull a pint and it foams up, and it's always good to run off a pint or two if you have left the keg for a length of time (nobody wants to drink the stuff that's been lying in the lines overnight). As for your 80 - 150 per keg figure, for a consumer price that sounds about right to me. Remember that bars and pubs buy in bulk, so are able to negotiate cheaper prices. Kegs of Tennents and Guinness are costing me (or my boss to be more precise) around 100, and Stella is about 115. However even if you manage to keep your keg chilled, your problem is going to be finding someone to supply… [cont.]

Can you fit 4 slim pony kegs in a standard kegerator?
Q. We'd like to have two different beers on tap with two back-up beers for easy keg change. If you were to keep the CO2 outside of the keg could you hold 4 slim kegs (7.75 gallons) in a standard keg (6.4 cu)? Or would you need a special keg for this? Where should I look?
Asked by Bazzy B - Tue Apr 28 23:08:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can fit two slim 1/4bbls, not four. You can fit 3, sometimes 4, depending on the interior of the unit, 1/6bbl kegs (5.16gal) which are the size most craft brewers use rather than ponies. You can get better beer that way as well! Cheers!

Is it legal to serve beer from kegs scattered around a bar?
Q. i am throwing a party in a bar in melbourne australia in a few weeks, it will be frat party themed. i was hoping that maybe i could scatter 2-3 kegs around the premises, and people could buy a cup, and then serve themselves. although, i'm pretty sure that's not legal. but if you had qualified bar staff at the kegs, and they poured the beer would it be legal?
Asked by morgan h - Wed Jun 3 08:47:08 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I doubt that laws allow people to serve themselves in a bar. But if it is a private party and a license is held that allows it then I think that would cover the legal issue.

Where can I find used kegs for sale?
Q. I am looking for legal(not stolen) kegs for a project I am doing and just want empty kegs. They can be dented or damaged.
Asked by Grendel42prime - Fri Apr 17 01:24:05 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It use to be you could buy them empty from recycleing centers. The manufacturs got a law passed that says they are still the legal owners of the keg even when you have paid a deposit on it from a distributor and are not allowed to get rid of it without their permission. Dented and damaged kegs should be returned and the manufacturer will destroy them. The best way is to go to a distributor and buy a full one and pay a cash deposit and have a beer party. After it is empty you return the tap and tell them you still have the keg because a friend owns a tap and its not empty yet. Years ago people used the kegs for older trucks as gas tanks. I got a 1/4 and 1/2 keg by buying the beer and not retuening the keg. The deposits was not that… [cont.]

How many kegs should I get?
Q. I'm throwing a Super Bowl party and was wondering how many kegs should I get? At first I was just going to buy cases of beer but I have more people coming than I thought! There will be about 75 people so how many kegs should I get? We're all pretty big drinkers. Everybody is staying at my house so i'm not worried about anyone driving! I've never bought a keg before so i'm new on this.
Asked by Nick M - Wed Jan 28 09:42:48 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 75 people? A keg has the equivalently of 160 cans of beer. I don't know about you, but if I'm watching a game as big as the Super Bowl, I'm going to be going through about ten beers before it's over. If all 75 of your friends are big drinkers, then count on them drinking what, about 8 beers a piece? That seems like a decent number to work with, some of your friends might drinker higher, some lower. That means you'd need 600 beers. 4 kegs has 640 beers, meaning that half of your friends would get 8 beers, and half would get 9. Adding a 5th keg would mean that everyone would get over 10-11 beers each.

A. From their site FAQ: What should I do with the empty keg? DraughtKeg is a one-way recycleable system. Depending your country's regulations on packaging disposal, you can throw it in the wastebin, bring it back to your retailer, or bring it to special depots. In all cases, DraughtKeg is a recyclable product. Or keep it around the house as a decorative item. Use it as a doorstop or footrest. Or collect them and build a wall around the house. Your call.

Other mini drought kegs besides Heineken?
Q. I tried the Heineken mini drought keg over the holidays. I was wondering people knew of other similar mini kegs, and how much they hold relative to Heineken's? Did you enjoy them?

A. they are the same size, most of the octoberfest brewers put them out, ie spaten, paulaner and others. I've seen becks and even coors light as well, they seem to be becoming more and more common. I do enjoy them though, much better than bottles for protecting the beer from light, brings down the odds that heineken is going to taste like garbage as is not rare. --- to add, I have had the "gravity fed" ones and I can assure that they seal back up, on both ends (air release and spigot) and tight enough to be drank from for several days and still give a decent head; I wouldnt want to stretch it past a week though and given their small size no one should have to.

Also, pretty much ANY liquor store can order them for you, along with the grocery stores mentioned earlier. If there is a college around Rosemead (PCC?) then check the stores around there. Where there is a college, there will be keg stores ;)
